I think powdered sugar is inferior to boiling sugar to softball, but either method makes grainy paste unless you some way to mill the paste. I've done it in a processor and its barely passable, you can still see almond grains...and yeh I was using a commercial robo and let it run forever. You can do yourself a big favor just buying almond paste and making marzipan by kneading fondant into it at approx 30% to the paste, use powdered sugar to keep it from sticking. It also depends what you want to use it for, for flowers you'll need it very smooth, for modelling you can get away with grainy. I also have seen both almond paste and marzipan sold in the supermkt, both are better than you could make without a mill.
Cheers, Gerard
