Great Question In my studies I can not recall ever crossing that info but I can recall finding that particular pastry in many listings of many different european countries. Primarily the eastern european countries with this pastry being a favorite of Russian Czars.

I think the most accurate answer is to remember that in earlier european times because of shifting borders due to war lords and wars and forced migration of so many displaced peoples that this hit pastry is probably like your mothers chicken soup recipe. Every mother has one!
