Fondant

I have more than 20 years experience decorating cakes and wedding cakes. I have had a request for fondant and have never used it. Do I need to use marzipan under the fondant or can I use apricot or plum glaze? I've deducted from reading that I need to put something between the glaze and the fondant. Thanks for any help. Sally
