I moved to Canada (B.C.) from Oregon in 1967. I had never heard of butter tarts prior to that. They are a traditional Christmas thing--along with mincemeaat tarts, rum balls, nanaimo bars and shortbread. They are made with an egg, 2 TB butter, raisins, brown sugar, and walnuts.
