I found this in a magazine for kids.."Science and Nature". I haven't tried it because I'm a grandma and it says this is for 6-10yr olds. Just kidding here goes:(Typing from the page) Don't freak til you get to the bottom, ok cause it says it will work with sugar and make rock candy!

"After doing the experiment Floating Egg, you will have at least two cups of saturated salt solution. Or you can make a saturated salt solution by pouring salt (sugar) into a quart of boiling water and stirring it until no more salt will disolve." "Each child needs a glass jar, preferably five or six inches deep, pieces of string, a large nail or straw to hold the string and a paper clip or small nail at the bottom of the string." DIRECTIONS: Suspend a wet cotton string into the saturated salt(sugar) solution. A long nail/straw across the top of the jar will hold the string in the vertical position, and a paper clip or small nail at the other end will keep the string from floating. Within a day or two, salt(sugar) crystals should begin to form along the string. It doesn't have any measurements so I don't know what "saturated" is...hmmm wish I had the rest of the science book! I think it's so thick, it won't take anymore, therefore won't dissolve. Hope this is it, but it sure brought back memories of buying it on a string!!!
