Sorry about your pound cakes. The problem may be with the recipe. Baking soda needs an acid to react with, such as cream of tartar. Try adding a little and see what happens, or use the same amount of baking powder since it only needs moisture and heat to leaven. Good Luck and don't worry baking soda keeps for a long time.
