Flat Baking Soda

I'm having continuous problems with baking soda being flat or dead. After baking 10 loaves of pound cakes and having them all come out yukky, I finally figured the problem was with the lousy baking soda. I buy it by the case (1# pkgs.) and was wondering if there is any special way to store it, or is it just old to begin with. Once the box is opened, should it be stored in the frige? I go through one box a week, at least. Gerard, wish I could help you with your rice cooker.
